Ensuring continued healthy growth of community radio in South Africa.

Community media and gender

Community media is in a unique position to address issues of gender inequality. Their important place in the community, and their mandate to “give voice to the voiceless” often means they report on the issues that mainstream media miss. Most stations have also recognised that gender is central to their visions, and are putting in place pro-active measures to ensure that women are represented as media makers, sources, and decision-makers.

Yet, we still have far to go. This page has been created to assist station managers, producers and presenters to incorporate gender into their programming and address gender issues. Ideas and contributions are welcome.

Gender Based Violence

In South Africa violence against women has reached epidemic proportions, one of the highest rates in the world of countries collecting such data.

More than 40% of women interviewed in a Cape Town study had experienced one sexual assault. 45% of women aged 14 – 24 described their first sexual experience to have been one where they had been coerced - „persuaded, tricked, forced [or raped]‟27.6% of men interviewed in a MRC study16 admitted having raped a woman, while 14.3% had raped a current or ex-girlfriend or wife.

Nearly half of the men who said they had raped, had raped more than one woman or girl. The SADC protocol commits all countries to halving the rate of GBV by 2015.

Men as Partners

Men are valuable partners in promoting and recognising gender equality issues. Men need to be involved if gender equality is to be achieved and reproductive health programmes are to succeed. Some research shows that men also want to be involved, and that many welcome the idea of mutually satisfying relationships built on trust and communication.
